Ex-NFL players’ donations advance brain-injury research

Medical understanding is still at early stage, neuropathologist says

In the wake of former NFL quarterback Matt Hasselbeck's announcement that he will donate his brain to science after his death, UW Medicine neuropathologist Dirk Keene discusses chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), the condition linked to brain injuries sustained by football players and soldiers. 

Victims of CTE "have (structural brain) changes that occur not just at the time of the injury but that may continue to occur over the course of their lives," Keene said.
